A beautiful sign has been placed along Race Street across from the mill dam and the Billy K. Haines Schoolhouse. It identifies the location of the early Saw Mill along Rancocas Creek. The saw mill was one of many in the area operated by Joseph Burr. He lived at 52 Mill Street, which is one of the most historic homes in Vincentown, NJ.
The Burrs were prominent in establishing Vincentown through the construction and operation of the saw mill. They also built and ran a grist mill.
Joseph Burr built the original saw mill in the village, which was left to his daughter Keziah. Keziah was married to Richard Howell. Richard Howell served several terms of Governor. Their granddaughter, Varina, became the wife of Jefferson Davis, President of the Confederacy.
